Splink Industries approached us with the need to continue the development of the My Theory Test by James May app, originally created by another company.

My Theory Test is a mobile learning tool designed to help the UK’s future drivers pass their driving theory test. Using James's 40+ years of driving experience, his app generates a personalized training plan for users, ensuring they learn all of the material in time for their test.

Challenges

It was challenging to make a rapid kick-off of the project since our team needed to implement a fast refactoring of legacy code first. After that, we continued developing the apps and meeting the client’s requirements.

Job done

In 12 months, our team of 2 frontend developers, a backend developer, QA, DevOps and a project manager scaled existing paid product versions with a free Android application. In paid iOS and Android versions, we redesigned some of the old features and enhanced the product with new ones. Now, we are responsible for maintaining all app versions.

Implemented features

• Personalized training plan. During the onboarding process, the user chooses their test date and the app generates a personalized training plan for students to be able to learn everything in time.
• Quizzes. The application contains dozens of interactive quizzes on topics like road signs, hazard perception and braking distances.
• Mock tests. Users can try themselves in real timed tests to check if they've prepared well enough to pass the test.
• Content purchases. The My Theory Test app offers additional premium content that can be bought through in-app purchases.
• Interactive video content. There is an interactive quiz for hazard perception training, where users need to click on the screen when they notice a dangerous situation. The user scores points for quick perception and James May gives a comprehensive explanation of each hazard when reviewed.
• Achievements. There is no greater achievement than doing a great job

Outcomes
My Theory Test by James May is ranked #5 on the App Store in the UK's education category with a 4.9 ranking from users (the highest of any Theory Test app available). Every month 10 000 unique users prepare for the driving theory test and 1300 DVSA tests are passed with the help of the My Theory Test by James May.
